De La Salle, 1949
Hello and welcome to the FORTYNINERS website. Below you can see all 172 FORTYNINERS in a picture by Annie Brophy taken in 1949.
The names on the right hand side of the page represent our efforts to identify everyone. Please contact us if you can correct something or to add in some of the missing names.
Click any photograph on this site twice to see it close up.
Are you in this photograph? Can you identify anyone here? These are the FORTYNINERS as they were 60 years ago on September 4th, 1949. The photograph was taken by Annie Brophy. On that auspicious occasion De La Salle College opened as a Day and Boarding College with a total student body of 172 in attendance.
On May 14th and 15th, 2010, this group will meet again in De La Salle College to commemorate and celebrate this historic event. If you are a FORTYNINER we would like you to join us. Please contact George Murphy on 00 353 (0)51-858427 or email; murphygtm@eircom.net

Fortyniners Event 2011
A Call to All Past Pupils
We, the ‘Fortyniners’, past pupils of De La Salle College, celebrated in May 2010, its opening as a Day and Boarding College on September 4th. 1949. It was a historic, moving, wonderful occasion for those of the ‘fortyniners’, family friends and De La Salle Brothers who were present. The event is commemorated by a magnificent photographic plaque of the 1949 group in the College entrance hall and on the ‘fortyniners’ website at www.fortyniners.wordpress.com
We hope to have our first Annual De La Salle Day this year on Saturday May 14th. with Mass at 12.00 noon and buffet lunch on the lawn at 2.00 p.m. (as we had last year). We will have Brother Timothy (who was present in 1949 as a student Brother in the Training College), plant a tree to commemorate the event. We hope this reunion will evolve into a De La Salle Day for all College past pupils and their families each year on the nearest Saturday to the Feast Day of St. John Baptist De La Salle.
All past pupils of the College and family members, from those who attended St.Patrick’s and the College, from 1949 to the present day, are cordially invited. If you intend to be present and we hope you will, please forward 30 Euro (55 for yourself and wife / partner / family member) to cover the expenses of the day to George Murphy at 4, Glenthomas, Grantstown Park, Dunmore Road, Waterford at your earliest convenience. Further details, if desired may be had from the College or email George Murphy; murphygtm@eircom.net

The FORTYNINERS Video
The original Photograph was taken in 1949 by Annie Brophy on the first day that De La Salle College Waterford opened it’s doors. This video commemorates the event more than 60 years on. It will be launched with a special screening at the FORTYNINERS reunion on the 14th May, 2010 in the college. Saint La Salle is the song and was specially recorded by Brother Ben and the De La Salle Senior Choir for the video. The 172 students that were in the Photo have been painstakingly identified and presented as individual portraits.

All 172 Portraits
The FORTYNINERS. Here they are, all 172 of them that are in the original photograph taken by Annie Brophy in 1949. I believe that there were actually some more students who were absent from the photo, maybe they were mitching. Click any picture to see a larger version and from below that you can scroll through to the next or previous picture. These images will form the content for the video that is being shown on the Friday night celebration (May 14th, 2010) in the dining hall of De La Salle College, Waterford. Hope I got all the names right, sorry about having to have a number for everyone, it was the only way I could keep track of everyone.
